This course studies the emergence and development of the Self from infancy to adolescence; it is designed to give parents, caregivers, and educators a framework by which to understand the inner life of the child. We will learn how to positively influence the emotional-social growth of children, so that they develop mental strength, empathy, the capacity for connection, and a strong sense of Self.
Throughout this course we will build a common language for understanding and talking about emotions; participants will learn how feeling and thinking are related and how behavior is motivated by emotion. We will explore how communication gets crossed and how to recognize and change problematic patterns. Participants will gain practical tools for reconnecting with their teen when communication breaks down and how to know what approach to take, depending on the individual personality of each child.
